DES MOINES, Iowa — Newt Gingrich says he has killed a chapter on climate change in a post-election book of essays about the environment. But the intended author of the chapter, who supports the scientific consensus that humans contribute to climate change, says that’s news to her.

Katharine Hayhoe, an atmospheric scientist at Texas Tech, confirmed in an e-mail interview that she had been asked to write a chapter on climate change for the former House speaker’s book. She said she was approached by former Palm Beach Zoo CEO Terry Maple, Gingrich’s coeditor, at an annual meeting of Republicans for Environmental Protection. Asked to confirm her chapter was dropped, she replied, “I had not heard that.”

The climate-change issue arose on Thursday night at a Gingrich campaign stop in Carroll, when a woman expressed concern about the chapter. She said she had heard about it on Rush Limbaugh’s radio program. As she began to tell Gingrich who the author of the piece would be, Gingrich interrupted. “That’s not going to be in the book,” he told her. “We didn’t know that they were doing that, and we told them to kill it.”

Hayhoe, whose husband is an evangelical pastor, recently wrote a book about climate change from an evangelical perspective. In an interview with Christian writer Jonathan Merritt, she left no doubt as to where she stands on the existence or the cause of the phenomenon.

“Among climate scientists — people who spend their lives researching our world — there is no debate regarding the reality of climate change and the fact that humans are the primary cause,” Hayhoe said in the interview. “It is primarily laypeople, such as talk-show hosts, or those with vested interests in maintaining the status quo, who are perpetuating the idea that there is no scientific consensus.”

Limbaugh picked up on those quotes on Dec. 19, including Hayhoe’s poke at talk-show hosts. He called her “one of Newt’s experts” and said she believes in man-made global warming. That no doubt created heartburn for Team Newt.

“Here’s the deal,” the text reads on the home page. “For every dollar you donate, you will receive an entry to win. So if you donate $10, you’ll get 10 entries.”

You have to read the small print at the bottom of the page, however, to get the details on the “deal,” including the obligatory legal requirement that individuals can be entered for a chance to win without making a donation. You are required to enter a donation amount, even if it is “0” to be in the lottery.

The small print also reveals that the value of the first prize is approximately $975 — one round-trip coach class plane ticket in the continental United States to Manchester, N.H., a one-night hotel stay in Manchester, and ground transportation.

The winner must also be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident of the United States, Puerto Rico, or the District of Columbia, and be at least 18 years old.

Once a donation is made, visitors to the Web site are taken to another page where the necessary information can be inputted to complete the process, including credit card information and your occupation and employer (the latter is required by federal law, the text states).

“Be a part of history. Be there with Mitt” is the headline on this page. “On Jan. 10th, history will be made in the first-in-the-nation primary state as voters cast their ballot,” the text states. “And one of you will be there to witness it all in person with Mitt.”

“Many of you have stood by Mitt from the beginning by donating your time, money and support,” the text states. “Election Night will be a great moment to celebrate all of your hard work.”

The program, “In Case You’re Curious,” or ICYC, is straightforward and easy for Carpal-Tunnel-prone teen texters. They simply text “ICYC” to a special number, along with their questions, and within 24 hours a “highly-trained Planned Parenthood Community Education staff member” will respond.

HONOLULU (AP) — President Barack Obama is delaying his request for another $1.2 trillion increase in the nation’s debt limit at the request of congressional leaders.

It’s basically because of a technicality.

The White House had been ready to ask for the increase Friday because the government is within $100 billion of exhausting its current borrowing authority. Congress would then have 15 days to reject the request, though Obama would veto any objections in order to ensure that the government does not default on its obligations.

But with Congress not due to return to Washington until mid-January, lawmakers asked Obama to delay his request so they would be in session during the 15-day period allowed for objections.

“The administration is in discussions with leaders in both houses to determine the best timing for submission of certification and any subsequent votes in the two houses,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Friday.
