NEW YORK, NY (CAIR Press Release) — A number of New York Muslim community leaders announced today that they will boycott Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s annual interfaith breakfast scheduled for Friday because of his public support for the NYPD’s widespread warrantless spying operation targeting Muslim New Yorkers.

According to an Associated Press investigation, NYPD officers have been spying on Muslim New Yorkers, often without any reason for suspicion, as they go about their daily lives at their businesses, school and mosques.

Not so long ago Bloomy was CAIR’s knight in shining armor.

(NEW YORK, N.Y., 8/4/10) — CAIR-New York is calling on American Muslims and others who support freedom of religion to thank Mayor Michael Bloomberg for a speech he gave yesterday defending the rights of Muslims and other Americans to build houses of worship.

The address came shortly after New York’s Landmarks Preservation Commission voted unanimously against granting protected status to a building in lower Manhattan, which would have impacted plans to build a community center that would include a mosque in its place. A campaign opposing the right to build the community center sought to use the landmark process to block its construction.

Protesters affiliated with the Occupy Wall Street movement say they have filed paperwork with the National Park Service seeking permission to demonstrate on the National Mall on Jan. 17 in an event billed by the group as “Occupy Congress.” However, a spokeswoman for the National Park Service said that they had not yet received the application.

The application was posted online Tuesday by applicants listed as “Occupy Congress and Occupy DC,” and with McPherson Square listed as as the applicant’s address. “Peaceful 1st Amendment demonstrations, including holding signs and group speaking”is the stated purpose.

About 50 Occupy D.C. protesters took to Capitol Hill to protest in what they called a “Take Back the Capitol” event Dec. 6. Occupy D.C. organizers are hoping for at least 2,000 marchers to arrive from around the country for “Occupy Congress,” according to The Examiner’s Aubrey Whelan.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghanistan’s government signed a deal Wednesday with China’s state-owned National Petroleum Corporation, allowing it to become the first foreign company to exploit the country’s oil and natural gas reserves.

The contract, which covers the northeastern provinces of Sari Pul and Faryab, is the first of several such blocks to be put on the market in coming months, Afghan Minister of Mines Wahidullah Shahrani said during the signing ceremony.

Bidding information for blocks in neighboring Balkh province will be released at end of February, and for the western Herat province by next summer, he said.

The ministry listed the initial value of the project with CNPC as $700 million. But the total could be ten times greater if more reserves are found and developed, and if international oil prices remain at today’s levels, Shahrani said.

(Reuters) — U.N. offices around the world lowered their flags to half-staff to mark the funeral of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il on Wednesday in a move the world body said was routine but which prompted objections from some human rights activists.

In New York, where the flag outside U.N. headquarters was lowered, spokesman Eduardo del Buey said the gesture had been requested by Pyongyang’s U.N. mission but was normal for the funeral of any head of state. [...]

But UN Watch, a Geneva-based advocacy group, said the U.N. human rights message was “at serious risk of being blurred today” because of the honoring of Kim, who died on December 17.

“Today should be a time for the U.N. to show solidarity with the victims — the millions of North Koreans brutalized by Kim’s merciless policies of starvation, torture and oppression — and not with the perpetrator,” the group’s executive director, Hillel Neuer, said in a statement.

(CNS News) — When asked an open-ended question by Gallup about which man living in the world today they admire most and whom their second choice would be, 32 percent of Americans surveyed this month would not name anyone, thus falling into a category that Gallup describes as “None/No opinion.”

President Barack Obama came in second to “None/No opinion” with 17 percent of respondents saying he was either their first or second choice for their most admired man.

I know this might sound crazy but I think someone of these people are being less than genuine.

(Daily Mail) — The Department of Homeland Security makes fake Twitter and Facebook profiles for the specific purpose of scanning the networks for ‘sensitive’ words — and tracking people who use them.

Simply using a word or phrase from the DHS’s ‘watch’ list could mean that spies from the government read your posts, investigate your account, and attempt to identify you from it, acccording to an online privacy group.

The words which attract attention range from ones seemingly related to diseases or bioweapons such as ‘human to animal’ and ‘outbreak’ to other, more obscure words such as ‘drill’ and ‘strain’.

The DHS also watches for words such as ‘illegal immigrant’.

The DHS outlined plans to scans blogs, Twitter and Facebook for words such as ‘illegal immigrant’, ‘outbreak’, ‘drill’, ‘strain’, ‘virus’, ‘recovery’, ‘deaths’, ‘collapse’, ‘human to animal’ and ‘trojan’, according to an ‘impact asssessment’ document filed by the agency.

Mumbai (Zee News) — Pakistani starlet Veena Malik, who has stirred a storm in Pakistan by posing nude for a magazine cover, is now facing the whip of Indian Muslim bodies as well.

The All India Muslim Tyohar (Festivals) Committee in Bhopal issued a fatwa on Wednesday against the actress for showing disrepcet towards the sacred institution of “Nikaah” (marriage) by singing a contract with a channel for a wedding on National TV. Her nude photographs too have outraged the community that forced her father back home to disown her for shaming him.

Majlis-e-Shura , 70-member supreme body of the All India Muslim Tyohar Committee, in Bhopal was receiving complaints from all corners and was urged to take stringent action against her.

“The complaints said that there were offensive photographs of this woman all over the internet and that she was going to have a Swayamvar on television. Islam has a certain procedure for a Nikaah. We do not have Swayamvar,” he added.

The members of the body sat for over two days to take a call on Veena Malik. At the end, a unanimous call was taken and a “fatwa” was issued on her, which means that she will be socially boycotted.

Calling her a disgrace to Islam, Khurram said, “The extreme step has been taken because the woman has openly revolted against the tenets of Islam and Prophet Mohammad. You are a Muslim only if you follow the rules of the religion. She has made a laughing stock of the community. The social boycott became necessary to stop our community girls from following her example.”

President Barack Obama’s approval rating has dropped among his key 2008 voting blocks, and “a generic Republican” leads him in the polls, The Wall Street Journal says on its opinion pages.

A Dec. 15 article by The National Journal — “Where Obama Has Slipped” — Ron Brownstein writes:

“Obama’s approval rating is now 12 percentage points lower than his 2008 share of the vote among young adults (age 18–29); 11 points lower among African Americans; and 10 points among college-educated white women. . . . compared to his 2008 showing, he’s tumbled 14 percentage points among independents, another group that provided him a narrow majority of its votes last time. [Among] upper-middle-income families earning between $75,000 and $100,000 annually . . . he’s dropped from 51 percent of the vote with them to 44 percent approval.”
