Newt Gingrich has earned the disdain of the Rev. Jesse Jackson for calling President Barack Obama a “food stamp president” and for recently suggesting that schools hire students as janitors.
Jackson, who said Monday that he hoped the Republican presidential candidates would discuss issues of race and poverty during the debate held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, blasted the former House speaker on Tuesday for his “disdain for the poor” and for showing a “total lack of understanding” about the country’s youth who are desperately looking for jobs. The civil rights leader also warned Gingrich that it was a mistake to speak about janitorial work in a casual manner.
“Janitorial work is very serious work and risky work. Mopping the floors, using the washing machines and working close to boilers and whatnot is very challenging work,” he said.

Impeding economic growth in our nation is that these jobs are somehow “below” so many people. Guys like Jackson belittle them in private while claiming to be their champions. At the same time, there’s been such a push for education over the past many years that we have a bunch of what I call “educated idiots” who won’t take these types of jobs(amongst many others), as they buy into the meme of it being beneath them.(it isn’t beneath them, they should have taken the job before wasting their time getting “educated”) “I have a degree in Women’s Studies”, I’m not working for $ 15/hr. To which I say fine, go ahead and live in your parent’s basement the rest of your life.
Wow – when I was in college,I worked numerous jobs (just like most of you, I am sure)to make money including cleaning out under freight elevators, loading boxcars, tarring a factory rooftop, some dangerous and some not so dangerous factory metal work, mopping and sweeping (oh, the challenge!) floors, boring assembly line work, cutting lawns, campus security, painting – basically anything to make money for school – now that was the challenge…that and finishing school so I would not have to do that stuf the rest of my life. I have had much more challenging and interesting jobs since then; so Jesse, I’d have to say you are full of shit.
I mopped the floors of my high school to help pay my tuition. I took pride in my work and can now wield a mop like a pro!

Gingrich never said or implied that there is anything WRONG with janitorial work. It IS hard work, and it is also honest work. It’s also a legitimate choice of jobs for someone who may not be cut out for college or white collar work, for whatever reason. Jesse is making all sorts of wrong assumptions here.
So what’s the challenge? Knowing which end of the mop to hold?

I don’t understand what the problem is. Most liberals want the schools to be teaching your children everything from gay marriages, religion and what food to eat, why not teach them how to clean? My daughter would refuse to use the restroom at school because the girls were disgusting. Why not have them clean their own filth? It may even teach them to respect property.

Janitorial work, while not real challenging, is the most important aspect of any facility used by the general public. Think about it, those toilets don’t clean themselves, and people are generally slobs, especially if they don’t have to clean up after themselves. I worked with 51 EVS Attendents (janitors) on a large casino. Our department worked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week cleaning up after casino patrons. Our facility was consistently #1 out of 7, based on J.D. Power scores. Christmas day, we were cleaning. New Years Eve, we were cleaning. Any holiday y’all enjoyed, at least 13 EVS Attendents were cleaning while y’all played on the casino floor. If the restroom wasn’t as clean as you liked, I took the heat and made sure that the fresh urine or feces was removed. Most janitors in our country are underpaid and underappreciated. The next time you encounter someone cleaning, thank them for their hard work. I guarantee you that not many people do thank them, yet they work hard and go home very tired, only to get up and do it again the next morning.
The only real job he had was a waiter in South Caroline where he admitted spitting in white people’s food as he was taking the plate out to them. Pure unadulterated hate.

No, Jesse, Newt was NOT disparaging ALL janitors– he was disparaging only the overpaid union-employed ones in NYC, that he immediately recognized as WASTE that could each be turned into literally dozens of similar jobs for youth to begin their working careers– instead of hanging around local playgrounds, dreaming of becoming the next Kobe Bryant– not that there’s anything wrong with that, but why not actually hold a valid paying job while “dreaming” at that age?

Janitorial work is hard work. I do know a few people that enjoy it because they work the evening or night shift and they work alone w/out the hassle of dealing w/people. It can be a quite profitable business if you get the right contracts.

My husband actually attempted to do this where he works, because they’d recently cleaned and polished the floors, and they looked really nice. He wasn’t being funny or sarcastic; he’s a nice guy who likes to give credit where credit’s due. The janitorial staff spoke no English. He settled for pointing at the floor, giving a thumb up and saying, “Bueno.”
