The Democratic National Committee blasted Mitt Romney for “not paying his fair share” after tax returns released Tuesday showed that he owed less than 15 percent of his income in federal taxes.
“Mitt Romney used every loophole in the book available to the wealthiest and large corporations to avoid paying his fair share,” Patrick Gaspard, the DNC Executive Director, said on a call with reporters Tuesday.

Mitt Romney acknowledged yesterday that his tax rate is probably about 15 percent–lower than what many high-income families pay. Romney, whose net worth is estimated to be between $200 and $250 million, pays a lower tax rate because most of his income comes from investments instead of a salary.
How does Romney’s effective tax rate compare to the recent presidential nominees from the major parties?
In 2004, John Kerry and his wife released portions of their separate tax returns that showed the couple paid an effective federal tax rate of about 13 percent on $5.5 million in income from the year before. (At first, Kerry only released his own tax return. He later released the first two pages of the tax return of his millionaire wife, Teresa Heinz.) Some conservatives, like Stephen Moore of the Club for Growth, used Kerry’s effective tax rate to criticize him for his opposition to a flat tax that would raise his taxes.

The RNC should fight back – enough with letting these lies hang out there. Mitt should do an ad comparing his rate with Kerry and others. Fight back for goodness sakes. Anyway there is no such thing as a “fair share” — there is only what you are legally obligated to pay. So the DNC can go ahead and raise tax rates for Dems and Leftists – we can create a tax chart for single, head of household etc and then lefties ….then they can feel real good about themselves paying more.
The 15% isn’t accurate anyway.
15% is what is payed ON TOP OF the corporate 30%.
By the way, the Constitution mentions “equality”, but it doesn’t say anything about this concept of “fairness”. (Progressive Income Tax be damned!)
They want to be the ones to say what a “fair share” is, just like they want to decide on the “code words.”

Sorry losers… Paying a 15% capital gains tax is *NOT* using a “tax loophole” – it’s paying the tax that is owed.
And by the way, lower income earners pay a lower cap gains rate – is that a “loophole” available only to the low income earners who, by that logic, aren’t paying their fair share?
Unfortunately, the lower your Ordinary Income Tax Rate, the less likely it is that you’ll understand the difference – hence why most people at the bottom tend to be Democrats.

I think, if memory serves, that in 2002 or 2003 GW Bush lowered the CGT to 15% and the 15% rate would expire in 2008. In 2008 Bush extended it and in 2010 Obuttma extended it again.
