George Soros, a billionaire investor and major backer of President Obama, stands to reap a windfall from legislation promoting natural gas-powered vehicles. The White House unveiled a proposal on Thursday that would do just that.
The proposal would offer incentives for companies to buy and use trucks powered by natural gas. Obama announced the effort at a UPS facility in Las Vegas that received stimulus funding to buy natural gas vehicles and build a fueling station for them. [...]
One company that stands to benefit handsomely from the president’s proposal is Westport Innovations. The company converts diesel engines to be fueled by natural gas. Wall Street analysts predicted a boom for the company if the NAT GAS Act were passed. CNBC analyst Jim Cramer said he “expects shares to absolutely explode” in the event the legislation were to pass.
If Westport reaps the predicted windfall, one of the chief beneficiaries will be George Soros, a major Obama donor and supporter. Soros’s hedge fund holds 3,160,063 company shares (as of its last SEC filing).

Berkshire Hathaway’s
(BRK) whopping $44 billion acquisition of Burlington Northern (BNI) is a tremendous endorsement of the US railroad industry.
Now, while Burlington Northern is highly profitable, US rail — especially passenger rail — is kind of the laughingstock of the world.
So what gives? Basically, Warren Buffett is betting on lots more government spending, particularly with respect to infrastructure, and specifically he hopes a lot will be allocated to rail. Obama is known to be rail friendly, and the first stimulus was expected to be highly infrastructure-based, but it wasn’t.
Buffett — who has the ear of the President — is guessing, safely, that we haven’t seen the end of that dream, that Obama will open up the government’s coffers for a major upgrade of the rail system. If we begin taxing carbon, thus making it more expensive to ship goods by truck, that’s another plus.
Remember this is de rigeur for Buffett. He made a lot of money betting the banks were too-big-to-fail during the crisis. He likes regulated industries like insurance and utilities. He’s benefited from housing. He advocates a high estate tax, which makes it easier for him to acquire family-owned businesses when they have to sell for tax purposes.

Converting gasoline engines to nat gas is costly.
Converting diesel engines to nat gas is just stupid.
Why not put nat gas designed engines in the vehicles in the factory to start with? In a few years, there would be millions on the road. The engines would be superior to conversions. Instead the morons in the government will subsidize the conversion, then wonder why trying to make a salad out of a pile of shit didn’t work out all the well.
