(Politico) — Reaction to the Jan Brewer encounter is still bubbling, with some black commentators now suggesting the image of the Arizona governor wagging her finger at the President of the United States has touched a nerve in the African American community.
On MSNBC Thursday, Al Sharpton posited that Brewer’s treatment of President Obama was another example of disrespect in a list of many for the nation’s first black president. His guest, Sirius XM host Joe Madison, said such incidents show that there are people “who cannot stand the fact that this is an African-American who is now one of the most powerful individuals on the planet,” Mediaite reported.
An NAACP official went a few steps further in an interview with POLITICO Friday, saying the tiff played on age-old and discriminatory stereotypes of whites being superior to blacks. Hilary O. Shelton, senior vice president for advocacy and policy at the NAACP, said he was particularly disturbed by Brewer telling reporters afterward that she “felt a bit threatened if you will, in the attitude that he had.”
“What were you afraid he would do, steal your purse?” Shelton said.

I disagree with the NAACP’s assessment.
I disagree with the notion that whites as a group are superior to blacks as a group.
On the other hand, I have no problem with the assertion that this particular white woman is intellectually, morally, and personally superior to this particular black man.
Many people in my family are not white, many are black, some hispanic. Many of them were Hillary supporters like me, we all remember the same chit which was done against Hillary.

OT just a bit – I’m a pretty confident woman and I don’t experience a lot of negative dominant man type of stuff. But, this past December, at a Christmas party, I experienced a man – not drunk – out of control – in my space, intensely communicating with me (not yelling). Before he started with me, he had smashed a dessert on the hosts head – saying that he deserved it. Clearly out of control behaviour. To get to the point – while I wasn’t scared at the moment, it did affect me after to the point that I dreamed about it. The man had no boundaries. Because he was so quiet with me, other people didn’t even hear what he was saying – he was in my face, intense and threatening – yes he scared me.
Could Brewer have been scared of Obama? Yes – women know that men can hurt them and that powerful, out of control men have no compunction about hurting them. Obama is not guided by civility – he supports abortion, killing US citizens without trial, etc. She is right to be scared – deep down in her soul in a primal way because she experienced his intensity first hand. We all should be scared.
