Historically, the giving of the finger was a demonstration that an archer still had his drawing finger. I believe it was the French, (been a while so I could be wrong on this), but the French would cut off the index finger of the English archers so they would not be able to continue being archers. So when the English would show up for a battle, they would basically flip off the French only in the sense that they were demonstrating they still had their drawing finger, and were still archers.
