Biden Says Because He’s a “Practicing Catholic” He Knows Contraception Mandate Can Be “Worked Out”…

I wonder how a “practicing Catholic” like Biden can justify his staunch pro-abortion views?
(Politico) — Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday that he thinks a solution can be found to the deepening controversy over birth-control coverage.
The furor has escalated this week over a new administration rule that exempts churches and other houses of worship — but not religious-affiliated institutions — from a requirement in the health care law that all employers cover contraception as part of their insurance benefits.
In his first public comments on the decision, Biden told Cincinnati radio station WLW that he is “determined to see that this gets worked out, and I believe we can work it out.”
Biden, the nation’s first Catholic vice president, was among the top aides who had warned President Barack Obama that the decision could be politically explosive, particularly with Catholics, Bloomberg reported Wednesday.
“As a practicing Catholic, I am of the view that this can be worked out and should be worked out. And I know the president feels the same way,” Biden said.
As the issue has heated up in recent days, Obama has stayed quiet. When reporters shouted questions to him Thursday, he declined to answer. “Come on, guys,” Obama said.
Biden said there has been “a lot of misunderstanding” from people who don’t know that the rule doesn’t take effect for more than a year. Still, he repeated, the administration will engage in a “significant attempt to work this out.”
New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan, head of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said earlier Thursday that he is “unhappy” with the president’s decision and “skeptical” of the administration’s offers to work out a compromise.
Biden brushed off Dolan’s criticism, saying he often speaks to the cardinal-designate: “I consider him a great guy.”

It seems some Democrats don’t have the stomache for Obama’s war on religion.
According to an article on U.S. Election News.org, Senator Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) called the Obama Administration’s effort to force contraception on Catholic organizations “bone-headed”:
“At least five Senate Democrats have expressed serious concerns over the new regulation, many of them being of Catholic faith. One Senator, Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) called the decision by the administration and the Health and Human Services “bone-headed.”
West Virginia Senator, Joe Manchin, introduced a bill to the Senate today which calls for blocking the federal mandate.”

It is just amazing how they continue to talk about this as if it is even possible to get the Catholic Church to ever compromise on the idea that they will not willingly participate in killing babies in the womb. It shows a vast lack of understanding of their beliefs and an even greater unwillingness to listen to what they are telling them. If they keep pushing there may well be excommunications before this is all said and done, and the Vatican is willing to tolerate almost anything before it goes there.
It is freaky to watch the Democrats commit political suicide like this over something they could find a million other ways to accomplish their stated goals. The only way this makes sense at all is if they are actually trying to go for the kill against the First Amendment using the Commerce Clause.
My favorite TV moment of all time was when the Pope visited the US in the early ’80′s.
PBS was covering a Mass at Shea Stadium. Providing the commentary were PBS’s Charlayne Hunter-Gault and Fr. Richard McBrien from Notre Dame.
Charlayne wondered if the Pope might change his mind about abortion once he found out how “the American woman” felt about the issue.
Fr. McBrien’s face iced over and he said coldly, “No.”
Obama is not going to be able to sweet-talk the Church into “compromising” on this issue.
And it would be a bad mistake for him to try any bully tactics.
Maybe Biden is going to try and work it out somehow with the already hundreds & hundreds of Catholic babies that have already been aborted. Maybe he thinks there is a bridge between those souls and the “living” that declare a mandate. ?
The Catholic League’s Bill Donohue said the Church would be making its next move very soon. C’mon ex-communications!

1) If this had been tried 20 years ago, I’m sure the Dems would have gotten away with it. John Paul II began changing the US episcopacy several years ago, starting in the Midwest. All of the current leaders, Chaput (Philly), Dolan (New York), Burke (Apostolic Signatura, Vatican), Neinstendt (St. Paul) started out as John Paul II appointments in the Midwest, and have been consistent voices against Democrats and abortion (Burke, Neinstandt, and Chaput denied Biden…and Kerry, I believe…communion). Their number has been growing.
2) Biden’s comments make me believe that his criticisms of the policy while it was being debated were political: do this and we lose voters…

What difference does it make if it takes effect today of next year, it is still unconstitutional. Article II Section 2 of the Constitution explains the duties of the president, maybe the people in these high government positions should take the time to read it. Also it’s time that the congress reads Article I so they could become aware of just what their duties are. What we have today is a run amok government where everybody is making laws, all of which are unconstitutional. Under the Constitution we are supposed to have a limited government, but in reality what we have is an all consuming government.

@L.E.Liesner – my very same thoughts. In addition, WTF has any timetable got to do with a fundamental religious belief? I guess Biden thinks that next year a new set of beliefs get handed down? What a fool.

Now it is open and obvious that the real goal of the Christian Right is to restrict or ban contraception altogether.
So every woman in America is looking in her medicine cabinet and understanding how intrusive and personal this “limited government” stuff is.
“Practicing Catholic” to someone like Biden means “I go to mass.” That’s it.
