Senate Dems Break Ranks With Obama On Contraception Mandate, Call Decision “Bone-Headed”…

(ABC News) — A handful of Senate Democrats have split with President Obama’s controversial birth-control mandate and slammed the administration’s requirement that church-affiliated employers cover contraceptives.
The five Democrats in the Senate expressing concern about some parts of the administration’s policy include, most recently, Sens. Ben Nelson of Nebraska and Bill Nelson of Florida, who have spoken publicly about their unhappiness with the mandate.
“This was a bone-headed decision by HHS,” Sen. Ben Nelson said of the new Health and Human Services mandates, according to the Nebraska Radio Network.
Nelson agreed with state Attorney General Job Bruning’s decision to file a legal challenge to the mandate.
Florida’s Nelson has also raised concerns. “My position is that church-affiliated organizations should be exempt, not just churches,” Nelson told the Tampa Bay Times Buzz Blog, adding that he has called the White House to express his concerns.
“It’s a matter of religious freedom,” Nelson spokesman Dan McLaughlin told ABC News.
The senators’ statements follow other Democratic senators who voiced concerns this week.
Sen. Joe Lieberman, the independent from Connecticut who caucuses with Democrats, tweeted Wednesday, “I am opposed to the Administration’s new requirement that religious org.’s must offer employees contraception benefits.”
Democratic Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania wrote a letter to President Obama last week calling on him to reverse the new ruling. ”I have strongly supported efforts to provide greater access to contraception,” Casey wrote. “I believe, just as strongly, that religiously affiliated organizations like hospitals and universities should not be compelled by our Federal government to purchase insurance policies that violate their religious and moral convictions.”

Wow, I was asking why there are no sane DNC members left – that is, DNC members who can see the damage this guy is doing to their party. Apparently there are some still. Strange that the White House has decided to make their stand on this hill. I suspect Obama is listening to Jarrett and ignoring everyone else. Naturally, we won’t find this out for a few years but once the whole thing comes crashing down in November and the blue on blue fighting starts, watch her name and Axlerod’s appear a lot.

A U.S. official on Wednesday rejected reports that China’s military was behind Iran’s downing of a U.S. spy drone. Two online news outlets, one in Asia and one in the Middle East, recently reported that China likely had a role in the downing of the CIA-operated stealth drone known as the RQ-170 over Iran in December. I’m going to go out on a limb here and bet that Obama does NOT back down from this issue. If nothing else, then not for a long while. Why?
1) Abortion is a pillar of Liberalism.
2) Obama was the most pro-abortion senator in the Senate.
3) The White House may bet that this will die down after a while but not while distracting us from the dying economy, skyrocketing deficit, multiple foreign conflicts, and horrific unemployment.

I agree with you, Ironmaiden. As a matter of fact, I think that Obama is purposefully choosing right now to make this an issue, so that it fires up the female voters. He had lot a huge chunk of them over the last three years, and he knows that abortion rights will get the off the fence and open their pockebooks.

He may have had 2/3rds of the young vote in 2008, but it is a very different time economically. He lost a lot of them in the OWS movement because they think he was not liberal enough. He lost a lot of them among the college/university crowd because they can’t find jobs. He lost a lot of them among the military crowd because he is cutting the defense budget. He lost a lot of them because of his own stupidity and incompetence.
OmustGo, I have been asking the same thing about whether the Muslims have to provide the same thing. But something else about this whole dust up bothers me, the whole religious freedom… what is that Muslims want to have in this country but keeps getting voted down by the states? This can turn in this oh so many ways and I trust not the dems or the muslim sitting in the White House… not one bit.
