Obama: Hey, We Really Need To Use “Algae” As a Substitute For Oil…

Thanks, super genius.

Via Beltway Confidential:

President Obama admitted today that he does not have a “silver bullet” solution for skyrocketing gas prices, but he proposed alternative energy sources such as “a plant-like substance, algae” as a way of cutting dependence on oil by 17 percent.

“We’re making new investments in the development of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel that’s actually made from a plant-like substance, algae — you’ve got a bunch of algae out here,” Obama said at the University of Miami today. “If we can figure out how to make energy out of that, we’ll be doing alright. Believe it or not, we could replace up to 17 percent of the oil we import for transportation with this fuel that we can grow right here in America.”

The Department of Energy (DOE) currently spends about $85 million on 30 research projects “to develop algal biofuels,” according to the White House, which announced that Obama is committing another $14 million to the idea.

Right now, to make a gallon of bio fuel from algae, costs about $33 a gallon to just to make. Of course, shipping and distribution are extra.

Perhaps, if oBama can give a Solyndra type loan of 50 trillion (with a T), to the project, they can get the cost down to $5.00 a gallon. s/

Maybe if oBama left Air force One parked on the tarmac for longer than a couple days, maybe the price of aviation fuel would go down.

Algae for fuel? Yeah, seems I heard something a while back that some short chain carbon- hydrogen compound was secreted/emitted from some strain of algae. But I also heard this was just a small step in creating fuels from algae or any other plants for that matter.

So Obongo, when can I expect my fueling station to have pumps and tanks installed to fuel algaeline into my diesel? Next week? Next month? Next year? Next century? Never?

If ALGAE were the most efficient source of energy, it would have been discovered as such LONG before now– just because a USURPER comes along and proclaims it so, DOESN’T make it so. He continues to dance around the issue of OIL, the MOST EFFICIENT SOURCE OF ENERGY for things that move about the planet– and he pretends it is NOT. WHAT or perhaps WHO IS IT that has him firmly in the “anti-OIL” camp, when he could be courting their interests to benefit his own? It isn’t as if they are lacking in monetary resources– the environ-NAZI’s must really have something on the Usurper for him to be so obstinately against OIL (and COAL for that matter).

ANYWAYS. ABout those jobs in “bumpkinville”? Is it because some kind of “census” has them listed as being active? Example: About an hour ago received a call from the “USDA” declaring that our farm was actively operating. They wanted to verify that. I said this place has not been a functioning dairy farm for 20+ years. That seemed surprising to the caller.

Or how about Dead People by the millions that are registered as “active voters”?

Bioengineer Jeff Way has seen what happens when the claims of algae biofuel companies get ahead of the science, when their promises of “renewable diesel” slam into the realities of engineering.

He’s been to the bankruptcy auction.

Once the standard-bearer for the algae revolution, GreenFuel Technologies failed almost two years ago. Spun out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the company promised to convert waste carbon dioxide into fuel-producing algae. It opened a celebrated — and, it turns out, expensive — pilot plant in Arizona. It raised more than $70 million in private funds. Then it went bust.

A former biotech pharmaceutical developer, Way hunted for deals at GreenFuel’s equipment auction.

“It was a very sobering experience to see the death of a biotech company,” said Way, who works on bioenergy at Harvard University’s Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering. “This company just went belly up. And I was buying their light bulbs for pennies on the dollar.”

The US and NATO are already in testing with actual drop-in tech. In fact the Green Fleet rolls out in a couple years. We got some of the caash the military is throwing around, and we are still positioned to be the dominant producer of the technology, unlike solar where china could undercut us. The guy in Arizona was working on a single feed and apparently didn’t realize that water is real expensive in a desert.

Even the best scenarios say algae as a fuel source is years away from being cost effective. Algae may turn out to be a viable alternative fuel – or not. We need to drill now, and develop *realistic* alternative fuel sources at the same time. Algae looks a lot better to me than wind or solar, although I’m also impressed by processes that extract fuels and fertilizers from industrial and food production wastes, like http://www.changingworldtech.com/

Get the U.S. out of the oil import business, and tell the ME to get fucked and/or die. Besides, the production areas are going to be highly radioactive for the next few decades.

  113. Defarge says:

    From Scientific American Nov 11

In the past scientists have spent a lot of time trying to make algae produce oil or solve other problems, most famously at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. But the government shut down that program in the 1990s, concluding algae would not be able to compete with oil, due to the expense of systems to grow it, nutrient needs and other hurdles. Given algae’s checkered past, what makes you confident of success?

It’s like the claims of arsenic-eating bacteria: people making extraordinary claims have the obligation to provide extraordinary evidence that their claims are true. I like to win arguments by having the data. Right now, nobody has the data in any of these fields. We have some new tools to approach these same problems. Algae has had a lousy history. There is no guarantee we will succeed either.

    Nice try Mr. Arm

–Massive investment from Europe including multiple feed stock that can adapt to differing AOs and their climates’. They are pretty damn keen to not be held hostage to Russia and the ME. If they can spin this up into retail markets to supplant a portion of vehicle miles with algae, good for them. There are no paradigm shifts in oil-tech coming down the pipe (see what I did there?), so efficiencies squeezed from every sector, every product chain is the new reality.

  119. Arm The Homeless says:

Defarge, let’s not lie about easily searched facts. The cash doled out for exploration subsidies are in the range of $72 billion over only 6 years. There is cash there for renewables, but some folks in large conventional fuel companies are gonna get gored. That’s where the friction is.
