Hamas Turns On Long-Time Ally Bashar Assad, Backs Revolt Against Syrian Regime…

To say they were allies is an understatement, Hamas’ exiled leadership has been based in Syria under the protection of the Assad regime.

CAIRO/GAZA, Feb 24 (Reuters) – Leaders of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas turned publicly against their long-time ally President Bashar al-Assad of Syria on Friday, endorsing the revolt aimed at overthrowing his dynastic rule.

The policy shift deprives Assad of one of his few remaining Sunni Muslim supporters in the Arab world and deepens his international isolation. It was announced in Hamas speeches at Friday prayers inCairo and a rally in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas went public after nearly a year of equivocating as Assad’s army, largely led by fellow members of the president’s Alawite sect, has crushed mainly Sunni protesters and rebels.

In a Middle East split along sectarian lines between Shi’ite and Sunni Islam, the public abandonment of Assad casts immediate questions over Hamas’s future ties with its principal backer Iran, which has stuck by its ally Assad, as well as with Iran’s fellow Shi’ite allies in Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement.

“I salute all the nations of the Arab Spring and I salute the heroic people of Syria who are striving for freedom, democracy and reform,” Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, visiting Egypt from the Gaza Strip, told thousands of Friday worshippers at Cairo’s al-Azhar mosque.

“We are marching towards Syria, with millions of martyrs,” chanted worshippers at al-Azhar, home to one of the Sunni world’s highest seats of learning. “No Hezbollah and no Iran.

yep, this is both a good and a bad thing, the funding of and alliance that Iran had with hamas was simply based off mutual hatred of Israel, hamas is a Muslim Brotherhood group, the shia/sunni tensions are widening and this will lead to greater conflict with Iran and sunni states, including in Iraq, however the MB in egypt hates Israel just as much and now what you will see is the entire Egyptian border with Israel being turned into one large rocket launching pad/terrorist base, tensions with Egypt will heighten to pre 67 levels, as the leadership in Egypt promises to invade and destroy Israel

Hamas doesn’t want to get caught on the wrong side of the fence. They are anticipating that Assad will fall.

But does this mean that Sunni Hamas will be opposed to the Iran-backed Hezbollah? Hezbollah, should still be allied with Syria, as they are the puppets of Iran.

    Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood

The recent meeting in Cairo of the supreme guide of the Muslim Brotherhood and Ismail Haniyeh is highly significant, marking the expansion of Hamas’s regional clout, writes Ramzy Baroud

    http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/2011/1079/op8.htm

There was an unmistakable hint of triumph in the comments made by Ismail Haniyeh, prime minister of the elected Hamas government in Gaza, when he was hosted by Mohamed Badie, the supreme guide of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood.

Both leaders said what would be expected of them under these circumstances. Haniyeh asserted that his movement’s “presence with the Brotherhood threatens the Israeli entity,” and Badie reaffirmed the Brotherhood’s commitment to “issues of liberation, foremost the Palestinian issue”
    (MENA and AP, 26 December).

It is very telling that Haniyeh’s first official visit outside Gaza as prime minister was to Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood headquarters in Cairo’s Moqattam district.

The recent Cairo meeting between Haniyeh and Badie could be understood within that historical context, representing a triumphant reunion and possibly open coordination.

This would once again rejuvenate the Brotherhood’s Palestine connection, and grant Hamas greater political leverage after years of isolation, and despite the current political turmoil in the region.
