I find the icy liberal focus on women’s supposed post-conceptional “rights” to be more and more disturbing every day. And yet also more revealing. They are obviously playing a kind of shell game with words to keep conservatives off balance and arguing against non sequitur “straw man” issues rather than using the more rational and logical – and therefore more forceful arguments clearly available to us. This reveals a kind of arrogant superiority in their thinking no doubt based on the supposition that conservatives, presumably as evidenced by their “irrational religious faith”, are not nearly as adept as they are in the use of reason and logic.

If a baby is not a person at conception, then please tell me when it becomes one.
One week? Four weeks? A month? Four months? Five months? Six? Nine? Do tell. And could you also tell me exactly what this magical force is that you imply comes along at some specific time to magically transform a useless collection of cells into a sweet little person?

Gotcha! You know you can’t have your cake and eat it too…

If a collection of cells is not a person until it is physically separated from the mother presumably at birth, then logic states that you are saying “birth” bestows person-hood on a human being and not conception. And while that might work in days of old, today there is just one little problem. Technological advancement and medical progress. Today, a person’s “birth day” is no longer what once might have been considered an entirely “natural” thing, is it? In fact, in the case of C-section births, a person’s birth day is more a matter of convenience and scheduling than anything else, right?

And that implies that useless collection of cells X is not a person on Thursday simply because hospital Y doesn’t have scheduling time to deliver him or otherwise render him newborn person X until the following Saturday.

How you getting on with those shells?

But oh dear me, what would happen if the scheduled C-section gets bumped forward a day or even a few weeks? Because that’s never happened right? That would mean only one of two things. Either newborn baby X is not really a person after all on that date, or person hood is solely granted by matters of hospital bureaucracy and convenience.

And if person hood, as I have now shown, is nothing but a random matter of how many hospital staff happen to be off with the flu on a given date, then why should we imbue person hood with such importance in the first place?

And now consider this …. (sorry, I noticed you stopped moving your hands around) If bureaucratic convenience determines person hood, how then can you ever be sure the hospital won’t simply terminate the person hood of your wife, your husband, or your mother, if you leave them there overnight and the hospital suddenly finds that it needs the extra bed for someone younger or carrying a fatter wallet?

Oh, but that could never ever happen right? Because all hospitals and all doctors and all nurses (and janitors and electrical contractors and laundry staff) everywhere all really, really care about a human person’s life…
