Biden was also able to make this claim with a straight face: Dem Senator Claire McCaskill is the “most principled person in the United States Senate.”
(Politico) — Vice President Joe Biden on Monday tried to pitch in some of his average-Joe charm to help Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill.
Biden gave what was described by a pool reporter as an “impassioned” 36-minute stump speech at a McCaskill fundraiser in Kansas City, Mo. He said McCaskill is the “toughest, most principled person in the United States Senate.”
“I’m a strong, strong ally of hers,” Biden said. “She knows who she is and what she believes in, and she’s willing to take risks to fight for what she believes in.”
Recent polls show McCaskill is trailing wannabe Republican challenger Todd Akin by as much as 4.5 percent, according to the RealClearPolitics average. Hers is one of seven Democratic Senate seats that analysts believe could flip to the GOP in November. And the dispatching of the vice president to her district no doubt is a sign that Democrats worry it could, too.
At the $2,500-per-head luncheon Monday, held at the expansive home of developer Charles Garney and his wife, Patty, Biden lamented the changes in the GOP since he first became a senator in the 1970s.
“It’s not your father’s Republican Party,” he said, adding that Republicans oppose even legislation they once believed in. “This is the first group of Republican congressmen who will not vote for things I know they are for,” he said, according to the pool report. They even oppose bills “they know would help the economy along.”
