New York (AP) – Philanthropist George Soros has announced a 10-year, $100 million grant to Human Rights Watch.

The organization said Tuesday that it is receiving the funding from Soros’ Open Society Foundations.

The grant challenges Human Rights Watch to raise an additional $100 million in matching private contributions.

It will require Human Rights Watch to increase its annual budget from $48 million to $80 million within five years.

Soros said in the statement that human rights are “at the heart of open societies.”

The international human rights group is based in New York and is supported by contributions from individuals and foundations.

Issa, the ranking member on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, also plans a flurry of subpoenas on the White House if Republicans take control of the House…

Some include the words, “Barack Obama, President.” Most say “Putting America to Work.” All say “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.” Regardless, if you see another gaudy sign promoting the $862 billion stimulus package, Rep. Darrell Issa wants to know about it.

Issa, the ranking member on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, has set up an e-mail address,stimulussigns@gmail.com, asking folks to send pictures of the signs with information. The California Republican also asked the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to explore whether the signs promoting the recovery act, and other actions he considers propaganda, are legal.

A Malaysian television station scrapped a commercial tied to the biggest Muslim holiday after viewers complained it appeared influenced by Christmas and Santa Claus.

The commercial began airing earlier this month to wish Muslim viewers a happy celebration of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. Ethnic Malay Muslims, who comprise nearly two-thirds of Malaysia’s 28 million people, are expected to start observing Eid this Friday.

The ad depicted children traveling in a flying trishaw driven across the night sky by a white-haired, elderly man to a fantasy land with sparkling lotuses and oil lamps.

The clip drew complaints from people who believed the man was reminiscent of Santa Claus, and that the clip looked like a promotion for Christmas instead of Eid. Some also believed it should not have depicted lotuses or oil lamps, saying those seemed linked to Buddhism and Hinduism.

The main topic of the day was the economy, but President-elect Barack Obama did say Friday, at his first press conference since his election, that he is dealing with a topic close to home.

“With respect to the dog,” said Obama, “this is a major issue.” He said it has generated the most interest on his Web site, but before a new addition is made to the family, “two criteria that have to be reconciled.”

One is that elder daughter Malia, 10, “is allergic, so it has to be hypoallergenic.” The other is that “our preference would be to get a shelter dog,” which would point to the possiblity of a mixed breed, or, as Obama said, “a mutt, like me.”

The Egyptian Newspaper Al Youm Al Sabeh reports: In a communication to the Attorney General of Egypt, Dr. Yasser Najib Abdel Mabboud, has accused Dr. Mohamed El-Baradei, former Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency and a candidate in the Egyptian presidential elections, of receiving funds exceeding $7 million (US) from Iran’s leadership as support for ‘political reform in Egypt’.

Abdul Mabboud , a candidate of the National Party and who like El Baradei is also running for the Egyptian Presidential election, was informed of the Iranian leadership’s willingness to support ElBaradei financially via an Arab businessman living in Europe. The check in the amount of $ 7 million is said to be meant to cover the financial costs of the election campaign and the activities of the Front for Change.

According to the Egyptian newspaper, a meeting between the Arab businessmen who is said to be close to El Baradei and who has only identified by the initials A. E. and Iranian official took place in a hotel in Bucharest, the capital Romania.

Obama last seen preparing a bailout…

(NY Post)- An accounting firm hired by Al Sharpton’s National Action Network found the civil-rights group in such financial disarray that it flunked its record-keeping — and may not even survive, The Post has learned.

The scathing critique was spelled out in a hard-hitting internal audit of NAN’s books, a copy of which was obtained by The Post.

“The organization has suffered recurring decreases in net assets — and has been dependent upon advances from related parties and the nonpayment of payroll tax obligations — to maintain continuity,” the firm KBL concluded in an April 2 audit of NAN’s 2008 financial records, the most recent available.

The audit, which was submitted to NAN’s board of directors, warned, “These circumstances create substantial doubt about the organization’s ability to continue.”

KBL said it was “unable to form an opinion” on the accuracy of NAN’s financial figures “because of inadequacies in the organization’s accounting records.”

(IPT News)- The Quds Day rally in Washington has become a gathering of the fringe of the fringe of rabidly anti-Israel demonstrators. Speakers included Medea Benjamin of Code Pink and two people who have espoused radical conspiracy theories at the Islamic Society of North America’s (ISNA) annual conferences.

As Palestinian and Israeli leaders meet in peace negotiations just a few miles away, the speakers called for a rejectionist line on Israel.

“The time has come that we must stir up our ‘religious leaders’ in this country to speak the truth about Israel,” said Kaukab Siddiqi. “They must put their hands on the Quran and say that they do not recognize Israel as a legitimate entity. If they cannot do that, they must be branded as kaffirs [infidels]. It’s as simple as that. Because the Quran says – drive them out from where they drove you out.”

Other speakers went far further. Abolfazl Nahidian, identified as imam of a mosque in Manassas, Va., cast the 9/11 attacks as a Zionist plot:

“September 11 is not done by Muslims. It is done by the plot of the Zionists in order to justify to occupy the land of the Muslims such as Afghanistan, such as Iraq, such as Pakistan, now moving on to the rest of the areas. They plot and they scheme and no doubt God is plotting and scheming against them too.”

(Haaretz)- A U.S.-based pro-Palestinian organization is planning to fly a plane-load of aid to Gaza, in defiance of an Israeli blockade on the Hamas-ruled territory. The flight was scheduled for this coming spring.

“We intend to send an aircraft to Gaza in much the same way boats were used – without going through Israeli or Egyptian airspace,” the Palestinian news agency Ma’an quoted an organizer of the initiative as saying.

The California-based Free Palestine Movement sponsoring the flight has been linked to the IHH, Channel 2 reported Sunday, adding that the organizers of the flight had spent a year raising the funds required to charter the plane, which can be landed in places where there is no airport.

The current initiative to send an aircraft into Gaza poses a unique security challenge as it would be difficult for Israeli forces to intercept an airplane without causing casualties. However, diplomatic pressure could still thwart the mission.

(The Hill) — President Obama fired another volley in the summer-long war of words with Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) in a Labor Day address to a union crowd in Milwaukee on Monday.

While not referring to Boehner by name, Obama clearly referred to the man who is eyeing the speaker’s dais should Republicans take control of the House in November midterm elections.

“When we passed a bill earlier this summer to help states save the jobs of hundreds of thousands of teachers, nurses, police officers and firefighters that were about to be laid off, they said ‘no’ to that, too,” Obama said. “In fact, the Republican who’s already planning to take over as Speaker of the House dismissed them as ‘government jobs’ that weren’t worth saving.”

That was soon followed by another dig.

“How do you like that – middle class families footing tax breaks for corporations that create jobs somewhere else!” the president said.

“Even a lot of America’s biggest corporations agreed the loophole should be closed, that it wasn’t fair – but the man with the plan to be Speaker is already aiming to open it up again.”

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Politico) — Wisconsin Rep. Gwen Moore warmed up a Democratic crowd for President Obama on Monday by accusing Republicans of criticizing Obama for personal reasons.

After rattling off the GOP’s opposition to the health care law, unemployment insurance and jobs legislation, Moore said “they” don’t like other attributes.

“They don’t like that he took his wife on a date and bought his daughter ice cream,” she said.

Moore added, “They ain’t seen his birth certificate.”

And if that fails they’ll just cut their heads off…

Ayatollah Khamenei made the remarks in an address to a large gathering of academics and university professors in Tehran on Sunday.

Using cogent arguments based on Islamic thought is the appropriate way to debate about the West’s human sciences, and Iranian academics should redouble their efforts to fulfill this heavy responsibility, he said.

The Leader highlighted the importance of scientific progress in society and likened the acquisition of knowledge to jihad.

“In Islamic culture, jihad means making efforts to negotiate obstacles… and now the country is truly in need of academic jihad,” he opined.

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka pressed President Obama and the Democratic agenda heading into midterm elections, a day after steadfastly defending the administration’s efforts in the face of stubbornly high unemployment.

The union leader opened for Obama at the annual Milwaukee Area Labor Council Laborfest, along with Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis and Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wisc.).

“President Obama and Democratic leaders share our vision of an America built on good jobs — and together, we’re going to get America back to work,” Trumka told the union crowd. “It won’t be the bankers. It won’t be the Tea Partiers. It won’t be the ‘party of no’.”

President Obama strayed from his prepared remarks at a Labor Day rally Monday to accused his opponents of talking about him “like a dog.”

Obama was in Milwaukee to speak at the Milwaukee Laborfest, attended by Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka. He used the speech to promote his $50 billion infrastructure plan and to criticize Republicans ahead of crucial midterm elections.

“Some powerful interests who had been dominating the agenda in Washington for a very long time and they’re not always happy with me. They talk about me like a dog. That’s not in my prepared remarks, but it’s true,” he told the union crowd.

The president isn’t known to stray off prepared remarks, and also took a more aggressive tone in the speech.

“They’re betting that between now and November, you’ll come down with a case of amnesia,” Obama said. “They think you’ll forget what their agenda did to this country. They think you’ll just believe that they’ve changed. These are the folks whose policies helped devastate our middle class and drive our economy into a ditch. And now they’re asking you for the keys back.”

(The Guardian) – The family of Rachel Corrie, the American activist crushed to death in Gaza seven years ago, could face the men driving the Israeli bulldozer that killed her in the second stage of their civil suit against the state.

The case, which began in March, reopened at Haifa district court today and will hear Israeli state witness testimony on her death.

The 23-year-old had been trying to prevent the demolition of a Palestinian house in Rafah, in the Gaza strip.

In 2003 an Israeli army investigation into the incident concluded that its troops were not to blame for Corrie’s death. Her family says that a full investigation was never carried out.

Representing the Corrie family, Hussein Abu Hussein, a leading human rights lawyer in Israel, said: “It is clear that the army investigation was very far from being sufficient, thorough or impartial.”

(The Hill)- President Obama used his Labor Day weekend radio address to defend his economic record and vow to “keep fighting” for the country’s middle class.

At the end of a long week which saw the national unemployment rate uptick from 9.5 percent to 9.6 percent and Obama come under criticism for calling this summer “Recovery Summer,” the president said he remained focused on the economy.

But Obama first reminded listeners of the recession he inherited from Republican President George W. Bush in January 2009.

“For a decade, middle class families felt the sting of stagnant incomes and declining economic security. Companies were rewarded with tax breaks for creating jobs overseas. Wall Street firms turned huge profits by taking, in some cases, reckless risks and cutting corners. All of this came at the expense of working Americans, who were fighting harder and harder just to stay afloat – often borrowing against inflated home values to pay their bills. Ultimately, the house of cards collapsed,” Obama said.

“So this Labor Day, we should recommit ourselves to our time-honored values and to this fundamental truth: to heal our economy, we need more than a healthy stock market; we need bustling main streets and a growing, thriving middle class. That’s why I will keep working day-by-day to restore opportunity, economic security, and that basic American Dream for our families and future generations.”

(LA Times)-  Al Gore has had some tough breaks — like losing the presidency after getting more votes than the other guy — but the noted environmentalist achieved a singular honor last week, becoming the first vice president to have a Los Angeles school named after him.

And, fittingly, the school will be devoted to environmental themes.

But as in the 2000 election, there’s a catch. Critics say the campus’ location poses a long-term health risk to students and staff.

School district officials insist that the Arlington Heights property is clean and safe. And they’ve pledged to check vapor monitors and groundwater wells to make sure.

The $75.5-million Carson-Gore Academy of Environmental Sciences will open Sept. 13 for about 675 students. As he was with Bill Clinton (who has an L.A. middle school named after him), Gore is second on the ticket to Rachel Carson, the late author credited with helping launch the modern environmental movement.

“Renaming this terribly contaminated school after famous environmental advocates is an affront to the great work that these individuals have done to protect the public’s health from harm,” an environmental coalition wrote in a letter to the Los Angeles Unified School District. Making sure the school is safe “would be an even better way to honor their contribution to society.”

Construction crews were working at the campus up to the Labor Day weekend, replacing toxic soil with clean fill. All told, workers removed dirt from two 3,800-square-foot plots to a depth of 45 feet, space enough to hold a four-story building. The soil had contained more than a dozen underground storage tanks serving light industrial businesses.

Additional contamination may have come from the underground tanks of an adjacent gas station. A barrier will stretch 45 feet down from ground level to limit future possible fuel leakage.
